What Does HydraFacial Do?

HydraFacial is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures we offer at the Minneapolis Anti-Aging and Skin Clinic. But what does HydraFacial do for your skin? And how does HydraFacial really work? A procedure doesn’t become as intensely popular as HydraFacial without producing substantial results for patients. And HydraFacial has definitely earned a superb reputation for itself.

For those who don’t know, a HydraFacial is a type of facial procedure intended as a means to eliminate lines, wrinkles, and imperfections in the skin. The final results leave our patients looking and feeling more vibrant, radiant, and youthful.

HydraFacial is unique among facial and dermabrasion procedures. HydraFacial is categorized as a hydradermabrasion type of procedure. Meaning that it uses a fluid as the source of its abrasion treatment. There are significant advantages to this approach, and those advantages comprise the primary set of benefits that HydraFacial offers over other similar treatments.

What Makes HydraFacial Different?

In order to understand how revolutionary HydraFacial–and its hydradermabrasion technique–is, it might be useful to look at other dermabrasion procedures. A more typical dermabrasion treatment will use grit or fine particles to “blast” the skin. This causes abrasion and weathering in a controlled way, exposing younger skin cells and eliminating fine lines, age spots, and other surface issues.

Standard dermabrasion works to a certain degree, but it can leave the skin feeling dry and irritated. For patients with especially sensitive skin, that can be a dealbreaker. And for patients with more robust skin, typical dermabrasion can be somewhat uncomfortable and unpleasant.

Hydradermabrasion treatments, such as HydraFacial, employ the same basic concept but favor a more gentle approach. Instead of using grit or fine particles to perform the abrasion, these techniques rely on a fluid to do the work. This leaves the skin feeling refreshed and rejuvenated instead of dry and weathered.

What Makes HydraFacial Stand Out?

This is probably a good time to talk about what makes HydraFacial stand out. Not only does HydraFacial use a hydradermabrasion technique, but it also employs a patented three-step process.

  • Step 1 – Cleansing: During this stage of the process, the skin is rinsed of topical oils and loose skin cells as well as any debris that might be hanging around.
  • Step 2 – Exfoliation: The pores of your skin can become clogged in a wide variety of ways. The exfoliating process focuses on using hydradermabrasion to cleanse these individual pores.
  • Step 3 – Infusion: HydraFacial will then infuse the skin with what are referred to as “serums.” The HydraFacial device uses its proprietary Vortex-Fusion tool to deliver a mix of collagen and antioxidants to the skin.

Together, these three steps complete the basic HydraFacial experience. There are a number of add on treatments that can be used to augment your HydraFacial results. For many patients, a scan by our Visia system will reveal areas of the face that may benefit from these add on treatments.

After the HydraFacial treatment is complete, patients are able to resume normal activities. There’s also no discomfort during the procedure itself. Depending on your skin type, it may take several treatments to achieve your desired final look, but most patients do report a noticeable increase in radiance and skin tone after only one session. Each session usually takes roughly 45 minutes to complete.

What Can a HydraFacial Treat?

HydraFacial treatments are popular, at least in part, because of their utility. HydraFacials can treat multiple issues–often simultaneously. For most patients, HydraFacials are used to treat some or all of the following:

  • Age spots
  • Fine lines and slight wrinkles
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Areas of discoloration
  • Imperfections and clogged pores
  • Debris around the skin (usually difficult to see with the naked eye)
  • Irritation of the skin

HydraFacial can sometimes be effective after only one treatment, but most often several treatments are required to achieve the optimal results. The number of treatments required will depend on your treatment goals as well as your skin type.

If you have questions about how to best achieve your HydraFacial results, you can schedule a consultation at any one of our three locations, where we’ll be able to discuss all of your treatment options.

The Feeling After a HydraFacial

The popularity of HydraFacials can be explained by two factors. The first factor is the effectiveness of the procedure itself. Patients who undergo HydraFacial procedures report more radiant, youthful looking skin. Age spots diminish, lines and wrinkles recede, and skin tone improves significantly.

The second factor is how patients tend to feel afterwards. Because of HydraFacial’s use of hydradermabrasion, most patients feel relaxed and rejuvenated after a session. That is, patients report that their skin feels good. It’s not unlike the feeling of moisturizing your skin after a long dry spell.
