How Does Skin Pen Work?

SkinPen can also be referred to as Microtherapy, microneedling, micro pen, derma pen or skin needling. The at home version, called derma roller or derm roller is also classified as Micro needling. As a consumer, the options and info can be overwhelming. Minneapolis Skin Clinic has done the research and homework for you, and chose the SkinPen for many reasons, most importantly the patient’s safety and sterility.

The at home use of derm rollers or derma rollers can be an breeding ground for bacteria or hepatitis, so we usually advise that patients steer clear of that option. Other in-office devices do not have the patented bio-sleeve technology that eliminates cross-contamination and SkinPen is the only stainless steel medical grade device for needling on the market.

SkinPen needle stamping creates thousands of micro channels or micro-injuries in the skin, which causes the skin to produce new collagen. The micro-injuries also create channels that allow product to penetrate more effectively into the deeper layers of skin. Essentially, SkinPen can trick your body into producing a large quantity of chemicals that are designed to heal. Because there is no significant injury to your skin, the healing chemicals are usually able to rejuvenate instead.

Skin Pen Procedure

The procedure typically takes 30-60 minutes depending on the size of the area treated, number of areas, and the severity of damage on the skin. Most patients do not report any major discomfort. In fact, many patients note that the only sensations they are aware of are the vibrations coming from the SkinPen instrument. On average, patients have some slight redness/pinkness (like a mild sunburn) for 1 to 3 days and some patients heal completely in 24 hours. SkinPen treatments can be scheduled a month apart and your skincare professional will determine the number of treatments based on your individual treatment goals for your specific concerns.

SkinPen Results

Results from SkinPen treatments will generally become visible within 1-6 weeks of your session. However, several factors can influence the prominence of those results after only one session. For example, scarring from acne and the overall age of the skin can both impact your final results. Many patients who have substantial acne scarring or who have more extensive lines and wrinkles will often schedule multiple sessions in order to achieve the best results possible.
